) — The Swedish Consul General on Wednesday signed an agreement with the UNDP to step up financial support for the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip. Ann-Sofie Nilsson signed the agreement with Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah to fund a UNDP-led project to remove rubble from infrastructure destroyed during Israel 50-day offensive during the summer.”The situation in Gaza is alarming after the devastating war this summer, especially with winter approaching. There is a need for rapid support to the Government of National Consensus in its efforts to kick-start the reconstruction. We are pleased to contribute to alleviate somewhat the difficult situation,” Nilsson said.
The Swedish government last week announced a five-year strategy for development cooperation with Palestine which entailed a 50 percent increase in development support.
